UH SEG Wavelets Student Group Introduces Geophysics to K-12 Students

Group Shared Information/Hands-on Activities at Dulles High School Math and Science Night

On November 17, the SEG Wavelets student chapter of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Houston presented and promoted geophysics at the Dulles High School Math and Science Night in Sugar Land, Texas.

The presentation consisted of a poster summarizing some basic concepts of exploration geophysics and several core samples and a fiber optic interrogator. The equipment for these demonstrations was kindly provided by the EAS Rock Physics Laboratory. The equipment was tested by about 30 K-12 students who applied force to a cored rock sample and then measured the resulting strain in the rock.

The presenters from UH EAS included the SEG Wavelets Vice President and geophysics junior Kaitlyn Bryant, Wavelets Secretary and Ph.D. geophysics student Kenneth Shipper, Ph.D. student Mayra Dayana Lopez Carrasquilla, Ph.D. student Joseph McNease, and EAS associate professor of geophysics Yingcai Zheng. Dr. Zheng is the co-director of the EAS Rock Physics Lab and serves as the faculty advisor of the EAS Wavelets.

SEG Wavelets is UH’s Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) chapter with undergraduate and graduate-level student members. The student group is devoted to promoting education in geophysics at many levels. The group works closely with the SEG parent organization, professional organizations, industry professionals, UH faculty, other EAS student organizations, and K-12 students in the Houston area to bring those students educational, social, and future employment opportunities.

Dulles High School successfully prepares its current population of 2,399 students in grades 9-12 to be global citizens and lifelong learners through a tradition of excellence by building character and developing technology skills.
