EAS Unconventional Resource Research Highlighted as Top Program in Canadian SEG Journal

The September 2015 issue of Recorder, the official publication of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, highlighted the unconventional resource research at five universities that they considered the best in the world in this area. University of Houston was one of the five highlighted.

The UH summary article, “Exploration geophysics at the University of Houston: The shale trail and other unconventional voyages,” by EAS’ Robert R. Stewart, Fabiola Ruiz, Julia Wellner, Nikolay Dyaur, and Long Huang outlined the geographic areas of shale studies – Eagle Ford Fm., Texas, and Marcellus Fm., Pennsylvania. It also discussed the lab ultrasonic measurements of shale samples from these areas and other studies ranging from 3D survey design for shale basins to 3D time lapse analysis of oil sands.

The shale studies group at UH is led by Stewart and includes 10 other faculty members and also graduate students working in the area of applied geophysics. The applied geophysics group includes Drs. John Castagna, Leon Thomsen, Fred Hilterman, Edip Baysal, Evgeny Chesnokov, Pete Emmet, Yingcai Zheng, Aibing Li, Peter Bartok and Hua-wei Zhou.

The other universities highlighted in the issue were University of Bristol (U.K.), Curtin University (Australia), University of Edinburgh (Scotland), and University of Texas at Austin.
